Global Healthcare Crisis Looms: Africa Short of 5.3 Million Health Professionals, World Demands 10 Million More

In a sobering revelation, Dr. Osahon Enabulele, the immediate past president of the World Medical Association (WMA), delivered a crucial message yesterday, emphasizing the urgent need for an enhanced healthcare workforce. According to Dr. Enabulele, Africa faces a daunting deficit of approximately 5.3 million healthcare professionals, while the global demand for healthcare workers has surged to a staggering 10 million.

Addressing the media upon his return to Benin City, Edo State, following the completion of his one-year tenure, Dr. Enabulele made a heartfelt plea to leaders worldwide to prioritize the development of robust health systems.

He stated, “Presently, Africa grapples with a staggering shortfall of approximately 5.3 million healthcare workers, while the global demand stands at an alarming 10 million. I wish to express my gratitude to all those who supported my tenure and our endeavors on the global stage.”

Dr. Enabulele underscored the significance of the ongoing advocacy for the establishment of resilient healthcare systems, noting that this essential mission has gained widespread acceptance. Consequently, nations across the world are demonstrating an unprecedented commitment to building and fortifying their healthcare infrastructure.

He emphasized, “This development is particularly crucial for Africa, given the fragility of our healthcare systems. In conjunction with this, we must address the imperative of cultivating a resilient health workforce. A healthcare system can only thrive when it boasts an adequate number of skilled professionals.”

As the global healthcare crisis continues to escalate, Dr. Enabulele’s call serves as a stark reminder of the pressing need for immediate action. The shortage of healthcare workers in Africa and the world at large highlights the urgency of reinforcing healthcare systems and bolstering the ranks of healthcare professionals to ensure that communities receive the care and support they need.
