Kenya Opens First National Health Summit on SHA Reforms in Nairobi

Delegates gather outside the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi ahead of Kenya's national health summit.

NAIROBI, KENYA –

Kenya opens its first national health summit at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi on Tuesday, with more than 5,000 delegates expected across the two-day forum, Capital FM reported on August 17.

The summit runs on August 18 and 19 under the theme Reforms Delivered, Health as a Right. The Ministry of Health has said the agenda covers access to care, health financing, primary healthcare, the health workforce, medicines, digital health and accountability.

The meeting is the government’s first structured public accounting for the Social Health Authority, which replaced the National Hospital Insurance Fund and has faced sustained criticism over claims payment delays, system downtime and patients being turned away at facilities.

Delegates are drawn from national and county governments, health agencies, development partners, private providers, professional associations, innovators and frontline health workers. The programme includes demonstrations of digital health and artificial intelligence tools being deployed under the Taifa Care programme.

County participation is the substantive test. Kenya devolved health service delivery in 2013, and national reforms have repeatedly stalled where county governments were not funded or contracted to execute them.

The Ministry of Health has framed the summit as a coordination and accountability platform rather than a launch event, signalling that the discussion will centre on delivery gaps in reforms already announced.

Why it matters: Kenya is the reference case African governments cite when designing national health insurance, so its delivery record shapes policy well beyond Nairobi.
