Build a pharmacy career, not just find a job

Community practice, hospital pharmacy, medical representation, regulatory affairs and digital health. Where the roles are, what employers actually ask for, and how to position yourself for the one you want in Nigeria's pharmaceutical sector.

Roles across Lagos, Abuja and beyond · Updated as new vacancies are published

1 to 2 years

The experience band most Nigerian pharmacy employers ask for. Entry level graduates are hired, but roughly a year of practice opens most doors.

2 of 10

Listings we have published disclosed a salary. Pay opacity is the norm in Nigerian pharmacy recruitment, which makes negotiating harder for candidates.

Lagos leads

Most advertised roles sit in Lagos, with Abuja second. Medical representative posts are the most likely to span several states at once.

About the listings on this page

The vacancies archived below were published in 2023 and the application windows have closed. We have kept them visible because they are a useful record of what Nigerian pharmacy employers ask for, what they pay, and where the roles sit. They are not open positions.

Six routes a pharmacy degree opens

Most graduates only consider the first two. The rest pay well and are chronically short of good people.

01

Community and retail pharmacy

Dispensing, counselling and stock management, progressing to superintendent pharmacist with responsibility for the premises licence. The most common first role, and the one closest to patients.

Entry: B.Pharm plus PCN licence
02

Medical representation and detailing

Presenting clinical evidence to doctors and pharmacists on behalf of a manufacturer. Territory based, target driven, and the usual route into product management and commercial leadership.

Entry: B.Pharm or science degree, 1 to 2 years
03

Hospital and clinical pharmacy

Ward rounds, dosing decisions, therapeutic drug monitoring and antimicrobial stewardship. The most clinically demanding path and the one with the clearest specialisation ladder.

Entry: B.Pharm, internship, often PharmD
04

Regulatory and quality

NAFDAC registration, pharmacovigilance, quality assurance and Good Manufacturing Practice. Growing fast as Africa pushes toward local manufacturing and tighter drug safety systems.

Entry: B.Pharm plus regulatory training
05

Digital health and pharmacy tech

Telepharmacy, e-prescribing, supply chain platforms and AI health tools. Pharmacists who understand both clinical practice and product are rare, and priced accordingly.

Entry: B.Pharm plus digital or data skills
06

Academia, research and public health

Teaching, clinical trials, health policy and programme delivery with donors and NGOs. Slower to build, but the route to influencing how medicines reach populations rather than individuals.

Entry: B.Pharm plus MSc, MPH or PhD

What Nigerian pharmacy employers actually ask for

Drawn from the vacancies we have published. The pattern is consistent enough to plan around.

Qualification

B.Pharm as standard for pharmacist roles. Technician and assistant posts accept certification or an OND with relevant training.

Licence

Current PCN registration is non-negotiable for any role carrying the title pharmacist. Keep your annual licence current, it is checked.

Experience

One to two years for most roles, two or more for detailing and superintendent posts. Internship counts for less than employers imply.

Location

Willingness to work in the stated area matters more than candidates expect. Lagos roles are specific to Magodo, Lekki, Ikorodu, Igando and similar.

Soft skills

Communication and patient counselling for retail, presentation ability for detailing, accuracy and record keeping everywhere.

Commercial awareness

Stock control, margin and target literacy come up repeatedly, including in roles that present themselves as purely clinical.

What the disclosed listings paid

Only two of the ten vacancies we published stated a salary. Both figures are from 2023.

Pharmacy Assistant ₦45,000 to ₦50,000 per month · Igando, Lagos · 2023
Medical Sales Representative ₦150,000 to ₦200,000 per month · multi-state · 2023

Read these figures carefully

Both are nominal 2023 naira and predate significant currency movement, so treat them as a snapshot of relative pay between role types rather than a guide to what you should be offered today. The gap between an assistant role and a detailing role is the durable signal here, not the absolute numbers.
