Iodine deficiency is still the leading driver of endemic goiter in Nigeria, especially in rural communities where iodised salt reaches fewer households.

Only about 5 to 10 percent of thyroid nodules turn out to be malignant. Most neck lumps are benign, but every one of them deserves a proper check.

See a doctor if you notice any of these

  • A lump or visible swelling at the front of the neck
  • Unexplained weight gain or weight loss
  • Constant fatigue, or a racing heartbeat at rest
  • Hoarseness, or difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • Feeling cold all the time, or sweating far more than usual
  • Irregular menstrual cycles or trouble conceiving

A simple thyroid function blood test (TSH, T3, T4) is usually all it takes to find out what is going on.

Use iodised salt

The single most effective protection against goiter. Check the label and store salt in a sealed, dry container so the iodine does not degrade.

Take levothyroxine correctly

On an empty stomach, with water, at the same time daily. Wait at least 30 to 60 minutes before food, coffee, calcium or iron.

Do not stop your medicine

Thyroid treatment is usually lifelong. Feeling better means the dose is working, not that the condition is gone.

Check your neck

Look in a mirror, tilt your head back, swallow water and watch for any bulge or lump moving in the lower neck. Report anything new.

Monitor hormone levels

A TSH test every 6 to 12 months once stable, and sooner after any dose change, in pregnancy, or if symptoms return.

Tell your doctor if pregnant

Thyroid hormone needs rise in pregnancy. Untreated thyroid disease affects both mother and baby, so dosing must be reviewed early.
