NHIA health insurance in Edo State has expanded to cover 4,000 residents of the Ovia Federal Constituency following a fully funded scheme sponsored by Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa. Announced on August 7, the initiative prepays National Health Insurance Authority premiums to eliminate out-of-pocket medical expenses for local families.

Over 2,000 beneficiaries have already been enrolled and issued activated insurance cards, with the remaining registrations currently underway. The comprehensive coverage includes medical consultations, primary treatments, minor surgeries, and maternal healthcare across major regional facilities:

  • General Hospital, Iguobazuwa

  • General Hospital, Okada

  • University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH)

  • Edo Specialist Hospital

Theodore Ehannire, the Edo State Coordinator for the NHIA, highlighted the program as a historic milestone, calling it the first large-scale constituency intervention of its kind since the authority’s establishment in the state. Representative Omosede Gabriella Igbinedion praised the intervention, emphasizing that financial protection for maternal and primary care directly preserves lives.

Why it matters: Constituency sponsored premiums are becoming a practical on ramp to NHIA coverage where state subsidy budgets have not moved.
