African startup funding in 2026 reached $3.3 billion in the first half of the year, marking a 73 percent increase over the same period last year. This decade-best first half was driven primarily by major raises in healthcare and electric vehicles, according to funding data reported on August 11. While deal count fell roughly 10 percent, average and median deal sizes hit decade highs, proving that venture capital is concentrating in fewer, larger rounds. Autonomous medical delivery firm Zipline International secured $950 million, while electric vehicle manufacturer Spiro raised $320 million. Fintech also maintained a strong presence, absorbing nearly a quarter of all capital despite closing fewer total deals.

Geographically, Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa accounted for 69 percent of total funding. However, about half of all capital flowed to companies registered in the United States or the United Arab Emirates, even though their operating teams and focus areas remain strictly African. Exits outside fintech remain rare. While healthtech has emerged as a top destination for venture capital, the heavy split in foreign corporate domiciles highlights where ownership and the tax base ultimately reside.

Why it matters: Health is finally the biggest destination for African venture capital, but the domicile split shows where the ownership and the tax base end up.
