The Ghana Health Service is issuing security-coded identification cards to health workers taking part in the Free Primary Health Care initiative, allowing members of the public to verify staff and shut out impostors.

Each community health nurse and other eligible staff will receive a first card at no cost, linked to the Ghana Health Service database. When scanned, the card confirms whether the bearer is a legitimate health worker.

Director-General Dr Samuel Kaba Akoriyea said the system is designed to catch anyone operating in the service’s name. “ID card will come with a code, when is scanned, we will know whether the bearer is a health worker,” he said. “So if anybody goes in our name, the person will be caught, because that person will not be part of our database.”

The identification rollout sits inside a three-pillar model for Free Primary Health Care delivery covering home visits by nurses, patient navigation services and appointment reminders. The programme aims to remove out-of-pocket payments at the point of service.

Why it matters: Verifiable digital identity for frontline nurses is the cheapest trust infrastructure a free care programme can buy.
