Wellcome Will Fund African Early-Career Researchers Up to 400,000 Pounds, and the Rules Are About to Favour Africa

Wellcome Early Career Awards health research grant application banner for African researchers

The Wellcome Early Career Awards scheme officially reopens for applications on 25 August 2026, operating on a rolling submission basis with three annual assessment cycles. The grant provides salary support for the lead researcher alongside up to £400,000 GBP in flexible research expenses, typically spread over five years.

Early-career health scientists, epidemiologists, humanities scholars, and clinical researchers based at eligible administering institutions across African low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are invited to apply to establish an independent research identity.

Strategic Geographic Eligibility Update

A crucial rule change takes effect on 29 October 2026. Before October 28, 2026, eligible administering organisations include institutions in the UK, the Republic of Ireland, or eligible LMICs globally (excluding India and mainland China).

Starting 29 October 2026, Wellcome will restrict lead applicant location eligibility exclusively to:

  • The United Kingdom

  • Eligible Low- and Middle-Income Countries in Africa, South Asia, and South-East Asia

This geographic tightening removes competition from several other regions while keeping African institutions central to Wellcome’s global funding strategy.

Program Overview & Financial Scope

  • Funder: Wellcome Trust (Discovery Research Remit)

  • Grant Scope: Lead applicant salary plus up to £400,000 GBP for research expenses (equipment, consumables, staff, access charges, and travel).

  • Additional Allowances: Overheads (for eligible LMICs), overseas allowances, and adjustment support are available outside the £400,000 research budget cap.

  • Duration: Typically 5 years (shorter durations permitted for humanities/social sciences; flexible part-time extensions supported).

  • Time Commitment: Applicants must dedicate at least 80% of their research time to the project (up to 40% time permitted for clinical responsibilities).

Eligibility Criteria

  • Academic Qualification: Must have completed a PhD or equivalent higher research degree (with thesis viva passed by the application date), OR possess at least 4 years of continuous PhD-equivalent research experience.

  • Career Stage: No more than 3 years of postdoctoral research experience at the time of application (adjustments made for career breaks, parental leave, or clinical training).

  • Institutional Contract: Unlike UK-based applicants, researchers based in African LMICs are permitted to hold an existing permanent or open-ended contract.

Assessment Cycles & How to Apply

Applications must be submitted online through the Wellcome Funding platform (Grant Tracker) and formally approved by the applicant’s host institution research office.

While submissions are accepted on a continuous rolling basis, applications are grouped into three annual review rounds:

  • Shortlisting: February, June, and September

  • Interviews: May, September, and January

Applicants should coordinate early with their institution’s research management office to align with these review cycles.
