Ghana Regional Hospital Projects Announced Across Regions

ACCRA, GHANA — The Government of Ghana has announced plans to construct three new 160-bed regional referral hospitals alongside a massive 400-bed Mother and Child Block at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. These ghana regional hospital projects aim to expand specialized medical access across Oti, Savannah, and Western North regions, while relieving severe operational pressure at the country’s premier referral center.
Minister of State for Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu confirmed that land preparation for the Korle Bu maternity expansion is underway, with President John Dramani Mahama scheduled to break ground for the regional facilities in coming weeks. The new regional referral centers are designed to deliver advanced surgical, obstetric, and pediatric care directly within newly created administrative capitals.
Key Infrastructure Targets Across Regions
The upcoming hospital construction projects incorporate the following facility capacity plans:
| Target Region / Facility | Planned Capacity | Strategic Functional Role |
| Korle Bu Teaching Hospital | 400-Bed Block | Advanced maternal, neonatal, and reproductive healthcare |
| Oti Regional Hospital | 160-Bed Center | Primary referral center for Oti administrative region |
| Savannah Regional Hospital | 160-Bed Center | Dedicated referral facility eliminating inter-regional travel |
| Western North Hospital | 160-Bed Center | Specialized regional medical, surgical, and pediatric care |
Strategic Impact of Ghana Regional Hospital Projects
Launching these ghana regional hospital projects directly addresses historical healthcare infrastructure deficits across Oti, Savannah, and Western North. Established following national referendums in 2018, these newer administrative regions have long lacked dedicated referral centers. Consequently, critically ill patients frequently face dangerous transit delays while traveling long distances to facilities in neighboring jurisdictions.
In Accra, replacing Korle Bu’s aging maternity structure addresses chronic congestion in emergency obstetric services. The planned Mother and Child Block will feature modern labor suites, neonatal intensive care units, operating theaters, and an assisted reproductive technology center. However, healthcare analysts note that long-term operational success depends heavily on securing specialized medical personnel, procurement of diagnostic equipment, and establishing transparent, long-term financing frameworks.
Why It Matters: Constructing new referral centers expands care access in unserved regions, but transparent financing and clinical staffing remain critical to preventing construction delays.
