KATSINA, NIGERIA — The upcoming Katsina health workers strike will officially commence at midnight on Tuesday, 8 September 2026, as four prominent healthcare unions begin a seven-day warning walkout across state-owned medical facilities. The industrial action follows the expiration of a 21-day ultimatum issued on 11 August that elapsed without official engagement from the Katsina State Government.
The industrial action unites key health sector unions, including the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), the Association of Hospital and Administrative Pharmacists of Nigeria (AHAPN), and the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN).
Key Demands Driving the Katsina Health Workers Strike
Speaking on behalf of the coalition, Ibrahim Balange, Chairman of the Assembly of Health Care Professionals, stated that health workers have endured years of unfulfilled promises regarding welfare, career progression, and facility funding. “Over the years that we have been on this struggle, the state government has never demonstrated any form of seriousness,” Balange noted, warning that the coalition will escalate to an indefinite strike if their demands remain unaddressed at the end of the seven-day period.
