Kenyatta National Hospital said maternity services at Kenya’s largest referral facility were under exceptional pressure because of industrial action by nurses affecting several counties, in a statement issued on Saturday.
The hospital said demand had climbed as patients were diverted from striking county facilities, including JM Kariuki County Referral Hospital in Nyandarua County.
KNH also rejected circulating allegations that a mother and her newborn had been denied care and died as a result, saying a review of patient records found “no corresponding record to verify the account”.
The Kenya National Union of Nurses and Midwives has notified police of a planned gathering on 3 September. Its Secretary-General, Seth Panyako, said about 9,400 nurses, 200 from each of Kenya’s 47 counties, were expected to march from Greenpark in Nairobi to present grievances to the chief executive of the Council of Governors.
County governments employ most of Kenya’s nurses under the devolved health system, and disputes over pay, promotion and permanent employment terms have produced repeated industrial action since devolution.
