Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to strategic health cooperation with China covering medical technology, hospital development, diagnostics, digital health, artificial intelligence and local manufacturing, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare said in a statement dated August 14.
The commitment was made at the 32nd China International Medical Equipment Exhibition and Scientific Conference, known as China-HOSPEQ 2026, held in Beijing.
Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare Iziaq Salako said international platforms such as China-HOSPEQ give Nigeria the chance to identify technologies and innovations that are appropriate, affordable, scalable and responsive to the country’s health system needs.
Salako urged partners to move from exhibition to implementation, from innovation to impact, and from partnership to sustainable capacity, language that points to the gap between memoranda signed at trade events and equipment installed in Nigerian hospitals.
The ministry linked the engagement to the Renewed Hope Agenda, which it said prioritises strengthening primary healthcare, expanding diagnostic services, accelerating digital health transformation and promoting local production of medicines and medical devices.
China is already a dominant supplier of diagnostic imaging and laboratory equipment across African public hospitals, and a manufacturing or assembly component would mark a shift from the current import relationship.
Why it matters: Nigeria imports most of its diagnostic hardware, so any shift toward local assembly directly affects device pricing and repair turnaround.
