ABUJA, NIGERIA — Civil society organization Nigeria Health Watch has officially launched the Nigeria Health Manifesto Tracker, a digital governance tool designed to record, analyze, and publicly evaluate healthcare commitments made by political candidates ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking at the launch event in Abuja, Solomon Oladimeji, Senior Manager for Monitoring and Evaluation at Nigeria Health Watch, emphasized that the digital framework will create an accountable public record of campaign promises. “We want to be able to ensure that every health commitment that is made ahead of the 2027 election is captured, analysed and publicly reported,” Oladimeji stated.
Oladimeji pointed out that the health sector received just 3.7 percent of Nigeria’s 2026 national budget, remaining significantly below the 15 percent benchmark established by the 2001 Abuja Declaration. At the sub-national level, state governments allocate an average of 5.2 percent of their annual budgets to healthcare services. “Most Nigerian families today are one illness away from a catastrophic financial situation,” he added, underscoring the urgency of political accountability in health financing.
Vivianne Ihekweazu, Managing Director of Nigeria Health Watch, noted that closing the gap between vague campaign rhetoric and measurable policy commitments was the central focus of the initiative. The platform will benchmark political pledges against objective health equity indicators throughout the campaign cycle.
By deploying the Nigeria Health Manifesto Tracker, civil society leaders aim to equip voters, journalists, and policy analysts with objective data to hold elected officials accountable after ballots are cast.
