LAGOS, NIGERIA — The Bricon Foundation has donated breast prostheses and specialized mastectomy bras worth N50 million to approximately 600 breast cancer survivors in Lagos. Officially presented during the organization’s 10th anniversary commemoration, the Bricon Foundation prostheses donation addresses physical and psychological recovery needs following surgical treatment.
Co-founder Abigail Simon-Hart, a 12-year breast cancer survivor, emphasized that post-cancer care must extend beyond clinical treatment to address holistic well-being and social reintegration.
Decade of Operations and Community Impact
Co-founder Dr. Niyi Adekeye outlined the foundation’s broader achievements since its establishment in 2016. Alongside the Bricon Foundation prostheses donation drive, the NGO has executed several key health and social interventions across Nigeria:
Economic Empowerment: Provided micro-grants to 27 cancer survivors to establish small business enterprises.
Educational Support: Facilitated school re-enrollment for 10 beneficiaries and established scholarship funds for children from affected households.
Nutritional and Clinical Aid: Operates a dedicated community food bank and has trained over 450 medical professionals in clinical oncology care.
Addressing Post-Mastectomy Recovery Gaps
Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Adviser on Health to the Lagos State Governor, noted that external prostheses and mastectomy bras are critical medical accessories that support spinal alignment, balance, and psychological recovery rather than cosmetic items.
The Bricon Foundation announced plans to scale its prosthetic distribution network beyond Lagos State to Sagamu and other regions across Nigeria.
Why It Matters: Post-mastectomy rehabilitation care in Nigeria relies heavily on donor-funded civil society organizations, highlighting gaps in public health insurance coverage for post-surgical cancer care.
