LAGOS, NIGERIA. Health hubs run by the digital health company mDoc in Lagos have taken chronic disease screening to more than 4,000 women, combining walk-in physical checks with virtual coaching and referral into facility care, Nigeria Health Watch reported on Aug. 17.
The hubs, branded NudgeHub, have served nearly 900 women at the Balogun Market site alone.
Chronic disease screening finds raised blood pressure in 36 percent
In an associated research study, 36 percent of women screened had raised blood pressure and about 10 percent had elevated blood sugar levels.
“What we consistently see here is elevated blood pressure,” said Naomi Okoduwa, a health coach at the NudgeHub. “Many women believe hypertension is only for older or overweight people but are surprised.”
Chioma Anasoro, a participant in the programme, said the model routed her into hospital care. “When I had pelvic pain and high blood pressure readings, my coach referred me to the hospital,” she said. “Before, I didn’t even put my mind on health, now I know it’s important to check yourself.”
Faith Kuranga, a project associate at mDoc, said behaviour change is the harder part of the work. “Helping people unlearn what they already think they know is the biggest challenge,” she said.
Nigeria Health Watch reported that nearly 30 percent of deaths in Nigeria are attributed to non-communicable diseases, the conditions this chronic disease screening is designed to catch early.
