KUMASI, GHANA — Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has recorded its first reduction in institutional maternal deaths in ten years, according to figures released by hospital leadership for the first half of 2026.
KATH Chief Executive Paa Kwesi Baidoo confirmed that the facility recorded 55 maternal deaths between January and June 2026, compared to 78 deaths registered during the same period in 2025. This represents a net decrease of 23 maternal fatalities over six months.
“We recorded a welcome reduction in institutional maternal deaths from 78 at mid-year 2025 to 55 in the corresponding period in 2026,” Baidoo stated during a mid-year operational review, emphasizing that no woman should lose her life while giving birth.
Hospital officials attribute part of the progress to the ongoing expansion of KATH’s specialized maternal intensive care unit. The unit currently operates four functional beds out of a planned eight-bed capacity, providing specialized life support and monitoring for high-risk deliveries.
As Ghana’s second-largest teaching hospital, KATH serves as the primary tertiary referral center for the Ashanti Region and the country’s broader middle belt. Consequently, the facility receives a disproportionate share of severe obstetric emergencies transferred late from lower-level clinics and district health centers.
Public health analysts note that institutional maternal death metrics track only fatalities that occur within health facilities. A reduction at a single tertiary referral hospital highlights improved clinical management on site, though it does not automatically indicate a national shift in maternal outcomes.
