Kenya has allocated Sh29 billion to construct 13 new Level 5 comprehensive county referral hospitals, each with 300 beds, in a push to expand specialised care and ease pressure on national referral facilities.
The hospitals are planned for Kilifi, Mandera, Marsabit, Embu, Migori, Nyamira, Turkana, Baringo, Nakuru, Bomet, Narok and Laikipia, with the thirteenth site yet to be confirmed.
Each facility will carry at least 16 intensive care beds and 10 high dependency unit beds, modern diagnostic equipment and climate-resilient design features including green engineering and solar energy systems, according to the Kenya News Agency report carried by The Star.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale chaired the consultative meeting on the programme, joined by Medical Services Principal Secretary Dr Ouma Oluga, county governors and presidential health adviser Wilson Aruasa.
Kenya currently operates 14,883 health facilities. The build-out lands as the country continues its transition to the Social Health Authority, which has shifted how facilities are reimbursed and raised the stakes on where inpatient capacity sits.
