Kenya has registered 32 million people under the Social Health Authority and collected Sh203.7 billion across its four funds in 19 months, of which Sh178.4 billion has been paid to healthcare providers, SHA Chief Executive Mercy Mwangangi said on 12 August.
The Primary Health Care Fund received Sh27 billion, against Sh1.8 billion under the previous arrangement. More than 10 million Kenyans have accessed free services at Level Two and Level Three facilities. The scheme has supported 1.2 million safe deliveries and more than one million inpatient admissions, while 48,000 cancer patients and 16,800 dialysis patients have received treatment.
Mwangangi framed the primary care allocation as the central bet of the reform, saying “a country that invests in PHC is investing in 70 per cent of disease burden.” The transition from the National Hospital Insurance Fund has been contested since launch, with providers reporting payment delays and coverage disputes.
