The Lagos State Government has unveiled a digital health platform intended to connect patient records, investigations and health data across the state, Voice of Nigeria reported on August 8 from the Eko Health Convention 2026.
The Lagos Smart Health Information Platform, referred to as SHIP, is designed to link clinical records and diagnostic results so that a patient’s history follows them between facilities rather than sitting in single-site paper files.
Commissioner for Health Akin Abayomi said data has become king, framing the platform as infrastructure for research, precision medicine and economic growth rather than a records system alone.
Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, said government cannot do it alone and called for deeper collaboration among the private sector, innovators, clinicians and development partners.
Adeyinka Shorungbe, Permanent Secretary at the Lagos State Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, said information exchange sits at the heart of an effective healthcare system.
The state also flagged complementary projects including a proposed University of Medicine and Health Sciences, the Lagos State Medical, Industrial and Innovation Zone in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, and a Lagos BioShield initiative for outbreak readiness.
Lagos carries one of the heaviest facility loads in West Africa, and record fragmentation between public and private providers has been a persistent barrier to continuity of care for chronic disease patients.
Why it matters: Interoperable records are the precondition for chronic care coordination, which is where Nigeria loses most patients between visits.
