Nursing careers, and the pay nobody publishes

Ward nursing, midwifery, specialist practice in dialysis and critical care, and the assistant roles that open the door. Nursing employers on this board disclosed pay more often than any other discipline, and what they published is worth reading closely.

Roles across Lagos, Abuja and beyond · Updated as new vacancies are published

3 of 7

Nursing vacancies disclosed a salary, against 2 of 10 in pharmacy and none at all in medical. Nursing employers here are the most transparent on the board.

Nearly 7x

The spread between the lowest and highest published nursing salary, from a dental assistant role to a nursing officer post. Title matters enormously in this field.

3 to 5 years

The experience band most roles ask for, rising to five years plus with certification for specialist posts like nephrology and dialysis nursing.

About the listings on this page

The vacancies archived below were published in 2023 and the application windows have closed. We have kept them visible because they document what Nigerian hospitals and clinics ask of nurses, what they pay, and where the roles sit. They are not open positions.

Six routes a nursing qualification opens

Specialisation is the single biggest lever on pay in this field, and it is under-used.

01

Hospital and ward nursing

Direct patient care on the wards, progressing from registered nurse to nursing officer and senior nursing roles with supervisory responsibility. The most commonly advertised route.

Entry: RN, NMCN licence, 3 to 5 years
02

Midwifery and maternal care

Antenatal care, labour and delivery, family planning and postnatal support. Employers consistently ask for documented labour and delivery exposure, not just the RM qualification.

Entry: RM or RN/RM dual registration
03

Specialist nursing

Nephrology and dialysis, critical care, theatre and oncology nursing. Requires certification on top of your degree, and it is where the pay and the bargaining power sit.

Entry: BNSc plus certification, 5 years plus
04

Community and public health nursing

Immunisation, screening, maternal and child health outreach and NGO programme delivery. Often the route into public health leadership and donor-funded work.

Entry: RN plus public health training
05

Care assistance and support roles

Healthcare assistant and dental assistant posts. Lower barriers to entry and a legitimate way in, but pay varies wildly between employers, so compare carefully before accepting.

Entry: caring experience, some require a degree
06

Education, management and practice abroad

Nurse tutoring, unit management, and international practice. Many Nigerian nurses look abroad. If that is your plan, build specialist experience first, it travels better than general ward time.

Entry: BNSc plus experience or postgraduate study

What nursing employers published

Three of the seven vacancies stated a salary. All figures are 2023 naira.

Nursing Officer

Multi-specialist clinic · Abuja · RN, 3 to 6 years · full time
₦160,000 to ₦205,000per month

Healthcare Assistant

Lagos · caring experience preferred · part time, 20 to 40 hours
₦150,000 to ₦200,000per month

Dental Assistant / Nurse

Dental clinic · Abuja · degree, 2 years · full time
₦30,000 to ₦50,000per month

Read this comparison carefully, because it is not what it looks like

A part-time healthcare assistant role advertised almost the same monthly figure as a full-time nursing officer post requiring registration and up to six years of experience. Meanwhile a full-time dental assistant role with a degree requirement advertised a fifth of that. These figures are not a ranking of how valuable each role is. They tell you that pay in Nigerian nursing depends far more on which employer you work for than on what qualification you hold, and that some employers are paying well below the going rate for the same work. Never assume a title sets your salary. Compare offers across employers before you accept one, and remember these are 2023 figures that predate significant currency movement.

What Nigerian nursing employers actually ask for

Drawn from the vacancies we have published across hospitals, clinics and dialysis centres.

Qualification

RN or RM as the baseline, with BNSc increasingly named for hospital and specialist posts. Assistant roles vary, some ask for a degree, some do not.

Registration

Current NMCN registration and practising licence. Let it lapse and you are out of the running before your CV is read.

Experience

Three to five years for ward and hospital roles, five or more with certification for nephrology, dialysis and other specialist posts.

Documented specialty exposure

Labour and delivery, dialysis care, critical care. Write what you have actually done and how often, not the rotation name on your certificate.

Shift availability

Nights, weekends and on-call are the norm in ward and maternity roles. Clarify the rota and how it is compensated before accepting.

Ask about accommodation

At least one of these employers provided accommodation. It never appears in a salary figure but can be worth more than a pay rise.
