What Is It?
Eltrombopag is a thrombopoietin receptor agonist, a medicine that stimulates the bone marrow to produce more platelets, used for chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), certain hepatitis C-related low platelet counts, and some cases of aplastic anaemia.
How Does It Work?
It mimics the action of thrombopoietin, the body’s natural hormone that signals bone marrow to produce platelets, helping raise platelet counts in conditions where they are dangerously low.
Who Is It Prescribed For?
Adults and some children with chronic ITP who haven’t responded well to other treatments, prescribed by a haematologist.
Dosage and How to Take It
Usually taken once daily on an empty stomach, at least one hour before or two hours after eating. Your haematologist sets your starting dose and adjusts it based on regular platelet count monitoring.
What If I Miss a Dose?
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered that day if a full 12 hours or more remain before the next scheduled dose; otherwise skip it and resume the next day.
