Fake vaccine detection in Nigeria is getting a major boost through a new 3-year, £3.7 million project designed to identify falsified, substandard, and heat-degraded vaccines. Funded by the United Kingdom Medical Research Council and reported on August 11, the initiative will use Nigeria as a primary field-testing site for cutting-edge screening technologies. The project is led by the Medicine Quality Research Group at the University of Oxford, with key local partners including NAFDAC and Obafemi Awolowo University alongside international regulatory bodies.
NAFDAC Director-General Mojisola Adeyeye noted that this initiative builds directly on the Vaccine Identity Evaluation Consortium, which was formed during the COVID-19 pandemic to tackle the rising global threat of unsafe vaccines. By deploying new screening tools locally, health authorities hope to significantly improve fake vaccine detection in Nigeria and protect public health across the region.
