ABUJA, NIGERIA — Falsified drug syndicates have shifted operations from foreign import reliance to domestic production facilities inside the country, regulatory officials warned in statements reported on 9 September 2026. According to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), the rise of Nigeria counterfeit medicine manufacturing represents a major shift in trade networks, moving counterfeit production directly into local communities.
Martins Iluyomade, NAFDAC Director of Investigation and Enforcement, explained that syndicates monitor fast-selling pharmaceutical brands, clone packaging through overseas facilities, and distribute fake medicines via privately controlled logistics networks.

Between June 2025 and June 2026, NAFDAC confiscated and destroyed N1.5 trillion worth of regulated items and secured 64 convictions against falsification syndicates. Concurrently, NAFDAC Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye urged lawmakers to enact harsher statutory penalties, stressing that current legal fines fail to deter lucrative criminal networks engaging in Nigeria counterfeit medicine manufacturing.
